Blackwood is a dense, richly grained hardwood with deep golden-to-brown tones that darken further with age and light exposure. It's one of the warmest, most character-rich timbers we build with, and it holds up well to daily use across dining rooms and living spaces.
Seven pieces sit in this range today: three dining tables (6, 8, and 10-seater), a buffet, a sideboard, a side table, and a set of nesting tables, each built to order in our Durbanville workshop.

Honest Answer
Blackwood's Real Colour: Rich Grain, Not Jet Black
The name suggests jet-black timber, but that's not what you'll get, and we'd rather say so upfront than let a name set the wrong expectation. Blackwood on our pieces runs deep golden to warm brown, with a pronounced, lively grain, closer to a rich walnut or dark oak than to ebony. The grain pattern is one of the more distinctive features of this timber: broad, flowing figuring that varies from board to board, so no two tabletops look quite the same. It's a genuinely distinct, premium-feeling timber in its own right, and the colour you see in our product photos is what you'll get. If the exact tone matters for your space, ask us for a finish sample before you order.
Buying Guide
Where Blackwood Furniture Works Best
The three dining tables in this range cover 6, 8, and 10-seater layouts, 1800mm, 2200mm, and 2600mm long respectively, all 900mm wide — so the choice mostly comes down to your room length and household size. The buffet and sideboard both suit a dining room or open-plan living space, adding storage alongside a dining table in the same timber; the sideboard runs slightly slimmer at 1140mm wide against the buffet's 1400mm, so measure your wall space before choosing between them. The side table and nesting tables work well flanking a sofa or as a flexible extra surface in a living room, the nesting set in particular suits a smaller space where a single fixed side table would feel too permanent. All seven pieces are built to your dimensions rather than a fixed factory size, so an unusual room shape or awkward wall length isn't a barrier.
Care
Caring for Your Blackwood Furniture
Wipe Blackwood surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip the finish. Use coasters and placemats under hot dishes and drinks, and wipe up spills promptly to prevent water marks on the open grain. Reapplying a wood conditioner or oil every year or two keeps the colour rich and helps prevent the timber from drying out. On steel-framed pieces, a dry cloth is enough to keep the powder-coated finish looking new.
Frequently Asked
Questions about our Blackwood furniture
Is Blackwood furniture actually black?
No — despite the name, Blackwood runs deep golden to warm brown with a rich, visible grain, closer to walnut or dark oak than to a true black timber. Our product photos show the real colour and finish of each piece.
What's the difference between Blackwood and your other timbers?
Blackwood runs darker and richer in tone than Namibian Kiaat or American Oak, with a denser, more pronounced grain. All three are solid hardwood, not veneer.
Do you build Blackwood furniture with steel frames?
On most designs, yes, the dining tables, buffet, sideboard, and nesting tables all pair Blackwood with powder-coated steel legs or a frame.
How long does custom Blackwood furniture take to build?
1–3 weeks from confirmed quote to delivery, the same as everything else we build.
Do you deliver Blackwood furniture across Cape Town?
Yes, delivery and installation are included with every order.
Can I get a different piece made in Blackwood if it's not shown here?
Usually, yes. If you've seen a design in another timber and want it in Blackwood instead, get in touch with your dimensions, and we'll quote it.
