Kiaat is the timber we build the most furniture in, across the widest range of pieces, not just dining tables. It has a warm, visible grain and a golden-to-reddish tone that deepens with age, and it's dense enough to hold up to daily use in a dining room or living room without losing its shape. It's also one of the more widely available indigenous hardwoods in southern Africa, which keeps it a practical everyday choice rather than a rare or difficult-to-source timber.

Choosing the Right Kiaat Piece for Your Space
Start with the room that gets the most daily use. A Kiaat dining table anchors a dining room and is built to seat 8 as standard at 2200 × 900mm, on solid steel U-shaped legs; a buffet with integrated wine rack adds matching storage alongside it, built as solid hardwood without a steel frame. In a living room, the TV stand and console table (1200 × 400 × 900mm) bring the same timber and steel-frame construction to a smaller footprint; the console works equally well as an entryway table or a slimmer media unit. The bar stool, with steel legs and a supportive backrest, suits a kitchen counter, dining bar area, or entertainment space. All five are built to your dimensions rather than a fixed factory size, so room size isn't a constraint; just tell us what you're working with.
Why Kiaat
Why Solid Kiaat Outlasts Mass-Produced Furniture
Kiaat is a solid hardwood, not a veneer or engineered board, so it doesn't chip, delaminate, or wear through the way particleboard furniture does. It's dense enough to resist the dings and scrapes of daily use, and because the colour and grain run through the whole piece rather than sitting on the surface, minor marks can be sanded and refinished instead of showing through to a core material underneath. That's a meaningful difference from flat-pack or engineered-board furniture, which usually can't be repaired once the surface layer is damaged, it has to be replaced. Built once, to order, solid Kiaat furniture is meant to be used for decades, not replaced every few years, and it's why we build the widest range of our furniture in this timber.
Construction
Hardwood Meets Steel: Our Kiaat + Powder-Coated Frame Construction
Four of our five Kiaat designs, the dining table, TV stand, console table, and bar stool, pair solid Kiaat with a galvanised, black powder-coated steel frame or legs. The steel adds structural strength without adding bulk, letting a tabletop or shelf sit on a slimmer, lighter base than an all-timber leg structure could support at the same size. The galvanising resists corrosion underneath, and the powder-coat finish on top resists rust, chipping, and everyday wear far better than raw or painted steel, so the frame keeps its clean black finish for years without maintenance. The buffet is the one exception in this range: it's built as solid Kiaat hardwood throughout, with no steel frame, for a piece that reads as fully traditional cabinetry.
Care
Caring for Your Kiaat Furniture
Wipe Kiaat surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, which can strip the finish. Use coasters and placemats under hot dishes and drinks, and wipe up spills promptly to prevent water marks and staining on the open grain. Keep pieces out of direct, sustained sunlight where possible, since strong UV exposure can fade the timber's colour unevenly over time. On steel-framed pieces, a dry cloth is enough to keep the powder-coated finish looking new; it doesn't need oiling or polishing the way the timber does. Reapplying a wood conditioner or oil every year or two keeps the grain looking rich and helps prevent the timber from drying out and cracking.

Is Kiaat a good wood for furniture?
Yes — Kiaat is a dense, stable hardwood widely used for furniture in southern Africa. It resists warping and wear better than softer woods and holds a rich grain and colour that deepens with age.
What's the difference between Kiaat and Oak?
Kiaat has a warmer, golden-to-reddish tone and a more prominent grain; American Oak runs lighter and more neutral. Both are solid hardwoods we build with — Kiaat suits a warmer, traditional look, Oak suits a lighter, more minimalist scheme.
Do you build Kiaat furniture with steel frames?
On most designs, yes — the dining table, TV stand, console table, and bar stool all pair solid Kiaat with a powder-coated steel frame or legs. The buffet is built as solid hardwood only, with no steel.
