This is the construction style behind most of what we build: a solid hardwood top or seat, Namibian Kiaat or American Oak, on a black, powder-coated steel frame. Neither material does this job alone. Steel gives us slim, strong legs that a timber-only frame at the same size couldn't match; the hardwood gives the warmth, grain, and repairability that steel alone can't.

Why We Build in Hardwood and Steel
Timber alone can flex and sag under a wide tabletop unless the legs are made thick and bulky; steel alone is cold, industrial, and doesn't age the way solid wood does. Pairing the two lets us build a slim, strong steel frame or leg set that stays out of the way visually, carrying a tabletop, seat, or shelf built from solid Namibian Kiaat or American Oak. It's the same logic used in our dining tables, TV stand, console table, bar stool, bed, desk, and coffee table, different pieces, same build philosophy.
Construction
How the Steel Frame Adds Strength Without Bulk
A solid hardwood table built entirely on timber legs generally needs thicker, heavier legs to avoid wobble at a wide span; our 8-seater tables run 2200 × 900mm. Steel is stronger relative to its cross-section than timber, so a steel U-shaped or trapezium leg carries the same load in a slimmer profile, leaving more visual space under the table. The trade-off runs the other way for the seating and top surface itself, which is why we keep those in solid hardwood rather than building the whole piece from steel.

The Powder-Coating Process: Why It Matters
Every steel frame or leg set in this range is galvanised first, then powder-coated black. Galvanising protects the steel underneath from corrosion; the powder coat on top is baked on rather than sprayed wet, which bonds it to the metal far more durably than ordinary paint, it resists chipping, scratching, and everyday wear without needing to be re-touched. The result is a matte black finish that stays consistent for years and provides a clean, deliberate contrast against the grain and colour of the timber on top.
Care
Caring for Wood and Steel Furniture
The timber and the steel on each piece need slightly different care. Wipe hardwood surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and use coasters or placemats to prevent water marks; reapply a wood conditioner every year or two to keep the grain from drying out. The powder-coated steel needs far less attention — a dry cloth is usually enough, since the coating itself resists rust and everyday scuffs without oiling or polishing.

Why combine wood and steel instead of building furniture entirely from one material?
Each material does a different job. Steel gives a slim, strong frame or leg set that wouldn't be possible in timber at the same size without looking bulky; solid hardwood gives the warmth, grain, and repairability that an all-steel piece can't. Together they let us build lighter-looking, longer-lasting furniture than either material alone.
